Jack’s Bay Beach is part of Green Castle’s 1600 acre / 6.5 km2 estate. This is a natural and safe eco swimming beach and provides a scenic spot to swim, snorkel and relax. The view of Green Castle in a boat from off-shore is truly amazing.
The Green Castle coastline also offers great walking. You can spend hours hiking along the shore with our guides or by yourself picking up shells and stones of all colors polished by the sea. In the other direction, the Green Castle coastline turns into high cliffs with historic remnants of the past and with dramatic views over the ocean. There are also a couple of secluded coves that are interesting to explore. This beach isn’t manicured or a ‘resort style’ beach, but it is great for swimming and snorkeling between the two bluffs, about a mile down the hill from the Estate House.
Nearby and also within Green Castle’s estate, is Green Castle Blue Hole – a beautiful spot where you can swim and see marine life. This stretch of coastline was the also the site of Jamaica’s second golf course and was very popular in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The old clubhouse although derelict can still be seen if you walk part of the coastline.
Did you know that the Jack’s Bay Beach area may have played an illustrious part in Jamaican history? Whilst it is commonly accepted that Christopher Columbus first made landfall at St Ann’s Bay further up the coast in 1494, the Jamaica Historical Society summised that from analyzing eye witness accounts and diary entries from people who accompanied Columbus on his famous voyage, there is a strong argument he first made landfall at Annotto Bay on the north east coast of Jamaica, very close to Green Castle and Jack’s Bay. It is suggested that upon approaching the area, Columbus was repelled by Arawak Indians, therefore he moved further up the coast to St Ann’s Bay.
In addition to spending time at Jack’s Bay Beach, there are many other fun things to do in and around Green Castle when on vacation. You could also consider the Green Castle Estate guided tour.
